Looking for a 50cc Moped or Gas Scooter?
Mopeds and gas scooters have always been popular modes of transportation throughout the world. Even more so in lesser developed countries due to the cost effective price level and operating costs. They traditionally become more popular during times when gas/petrol prices are on the rise. Operating one of these bikes represents significant cost savings as compared to driving a car or truck. Depending on how far the commute is, they can even be more cost effective than taking public transportation. 50cc Mopeds and 50cc scooters can get as much as 60 to 100 miles per gallon in fuel economy. (US gallon)
Initial Cost
Prices for these little gems range anywhere from $600 to $8000 (US dollars). Used scooters for sale can be even cheaper. So if you are buying at the low end of the price range, it doesn’t take too long to pay off the investment in dollars saved due the excellent gas economy and inexpensive insurance costs (as compared to cars and trucks). As with most things, the general rule is you get what you pay for so the more you are willing to spend the better the quality. Again this is in general terms.
Name Brand vs Knock offs
Name branded scooters and mopeds will cost more but bring with them certain benefits. Mainly they will be of higher quality and will require less maintenance and repairs. They also will come with better warranties. The names Honda, Yamaha and Vespa come to mind when thinking of this category. The high end units will usually achieve higher speeds (as much as 100 mph) and may be more smooth in their handling characteristics. Recently retro bikes have become very popular bringing back memories of the 50s and 60s. These bikes can also be priced at the high end of the spectrum and are usually made with a high level of quality. If you decide to purchase a knock off unit (probably made in China) make sure you can actually get it registered in your state. You will need a MSO – (Certificate of Origin) in order to license them for street use in most states. Not all units will come with one so ask before you buy.
Replacement Parts
Another benefit of buying a name branded unit is that you will be able to find parts and get service when you need to. If you are uncomfortable doing your own repairs, you probably want to buy your moped or scooter from a local shop where you can also get it serviced. It is not impossible to find parts, however for most any unit since there are a lot of the cheaper units sold and there are several companies servicing the parts requirements. Worst case they can usually be found on EBay. Another down side is that you will probably need parts more often as the bikes are put together with many low quality components.
I have two knock off bikes and enjoy them thoroughly. I was able to get more bike than I would have been able to afford if I bought name brand. There have been some minor replacements of parts to do but generally they have been a good value. Come back to this site often to read more about scooters and mopeds.
